UPDATE 11/12/13 @ 6:52 pm
BUCHTEL, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Intruders beware. Buchtel resident Rozella Brown may be 83 years old, but she's not going to be victimized without a fight.

The Athens County Sheriff's Office says Brown drove an intruder out of her house Monday afternoon by beating him repeatedly with her cane.

"I started pounding him with my cane," Brown said. "He was crawling in my kitchen, and I was still swinging. I kept following him, asking who he was and what he wanted."

Brown said she couldn't get up in time to answer the doorbell. A few minutes later, she found the intruder crawling in the kitchen, apparently believing no one was home.

"You see this kind of thing on television, you hear it all the time," she said. "It's just different when it happens to you."

The intruder, believed to possibly be a teenager, got away with about $100 taken from Brown's purse. On Tuesday, she was trying to keep her sense of humor and her own sense of justice.

The thief may have gotten away with the cash, but he still messed with the wrong woman.

"I just hope he has a good time spending it," Brown said. "And then chokes to death with whatever he does get with it."

ORIGINAL STORY 11/11/12
ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- An 83-year-old woman beat an intruder with her cane when he broke into her home Monday along Bessemer Road in Buchtel, according to information from the Athens County Sheriff's Department.

The woman described the intruder as a "school-aged" male. She said she heard her doorbell ring about noon Monday, but she did not answer it or look to see who was at the door.

Shortly after that, the woman said she saw a "figure" crawling across her kitchen floor and moving toward her bedroom. She explained that she was watching television at the time in her living room.

The woman got up and went to her bedroom when she saw the intruder. She said he was near the location where she normally keeps her purse. She said the intruder was average height and weight and wearing a gray corduroy hooded jacket and blue jeans.

That's when the woman sad she began striking the intruder with her cane, causing him to cover his face with his hands and arms.

She said the intruder then went into the living room where she normally sits and took her billfold from her purse. She told deputies she believes the intruder got away with about $100 cash -- but nothing else.

The woman also said she beat the intruder all the way out the door while asking what his name was. She said he responded, "Austin."

Deputies brought a K-9 unit to the home, but it was unable to pick up a scent track. The case remains under investigation.
