Fairland Schools Looking At New Security Options

PROCTORVILLE, OH (WSAZ) -- The tragedy in Newtown, Conn. has raised a lot of questions nationwide about security in schools, but officials in Fairland's school district are implementing plans for keeping students and staff safe.

Principal Chad Belville is no stranger to in's and out's of Fairland High School, but after the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. his main priority is safety here at home.

Belville and other school officials had a special meeting to look at their current system and brainstorm new options.

"I believe in these type of situations, you never want to feel like you have all the answers," Belville said. "If you ever stop looking at your policies and questioning can we do it better, are we doing the best we can possibly do, then you're really doing an injustice to your students."

Options include installing a buzzer system, sending an alert when someone enters or leaves a building, having an armed guard or officer inside schools and more.

Jason Gorby, school board member, says keeping everyone safe is top priority.

"You're very concerned as a parent and as a board member for protecting every child out there," Gorby said. "You want to do everything that you can possible and there's always that shadow of a doubt that you can never do enough."

The school board will meet Jan. 14 to narrow down some of the options discussed during the meeting.
