Family Sick of Trash Ending Up in Their Yard

GUYANDOTTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One family is fed up with the endless amount of trash they say ends up in their yard day after day.

They say the place where much of the waste comes from won't let them dispose of it in their trash cans.

"You can turn your head and something new will be out here," Ryan Denney said while picking up an empty milk bottle from his front yard.

Ryan says the yard at his home on Buffington Street in Guyandotte accumulates new waste every day.

"Just to mow the grass, we have to go pick up the litter before we can even mow it," his mother Kay Denney said.

They claim the bulk of the litter comes from customers at the Marathon gas station next door to their house.

"There are ten trash cans over there, and they just seem to throw it on the ground,” Ryan said. “It blows through the fence onto my yard."

Ryan says when he collects that trash, he throws it away in the Marathon's trash cans, but they've now told him he can't do that any more.

"I was told that is my responsibility,” he said. “It is not Marathon's problem."

Ryan says the manager threatened to take legal action against him if he throws anything away there again.

He says they’ve also accused him of throwing away his own personal garbage there, but he says that’s not true.

The manager of the Marathon said she can't comment. She referred us to corporate, who said they were not aware of the issue.

Kay says this unnecessary dilemma would take care of itself if people would just be responsible with their own trash.

"This wouldn't be a problem if people would just stop littering," she said.

Ryan says along with trash they’ve had unusual things end up in their yard, including multiple bicycles and drug needles.
