Fire Chief Dies While Helping Neighbors

LAKE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Lake Volunteer Fire Department, in Logan County, is mourning the loss of it's leader.

According to West Virginia Assistant State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic, who is investigating the case, George Underwood died Thursday evening.

Chief Underwood was helping to clean out a culvert that was blocked and flooding when he collapsed.

It happened along Craddock Fork Road.

Underwood has been the chief of the Lake Volunteer Fire Department for several years.

According to Baltic, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Deskins, will serve as acting chief.
