UPDATE 7/2/14 @ 10:30 p.m.
FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A fire that destroyed a trucking business in Prestonsburg on Wednesday was so massive that nearly 70 firefighters from 13 departments responded, Prestonsburg Fire Chief Bobby Carpenter said.
Worldwide Equipment, located off of Ky. 1428, was destroyed by the flames.
"(It was) probably one of the hardest commercial fires we have fought in a while," Carpenter said. "The humidity, the heat, accessibility, and water supply was a major issue in this fire."
The fire, which was reported about 4 p.m. Wednesday, may have started on the second floor attic of the building, Carpenter said.
The building became unstable as fire spread through the ceiling. Carpenter said the ceiling started to cave in early during the fire, forcing crews to evacuate and take a defensive stance. He said it was too dangerous for firefighters to stay inside.
The city hasn't seen such a large commercial fire since the mid-80s when a commercial lumber company burned, Carpenter said.
The fire started about 4 p.m. Wednesday at Worldwide Equipment, located off of Ky. 1428.
Worldwide Equipment is a trucking business based in Floyd County.
While there is no word on how the fire started, crews remained at the scene as of 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
No one was injured.
We have a crew headed to the scene.
