UPDATE: Fire Trucks, Equipment Damaged & Destroyed in Fire Dept. Fire

UPDATE 9/19/13 @ 7 p.m.>
BLAINE, Ky. (WSAZ) --- Kentucky State Police are now investigating the fire at the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department as arson.

"Our investigation has concluded there were items missing in the fire department." says Trooper Michael Murriell. "At this point it's too early to tell if one was done to cover up or conceal the other, but we do know there was a theft and the fire took place after the theft."

Fire heavily damaged the department on September 12, 2013, in the early morning hours. The chief, Butch Smith, was called in because an alleged water leak.

"It's devastating. When I got there, I couldn't even open the doors, they were too hot," says Smith. "But we've got it covered."

Three trucks were lost in the fire. The department does have the promise of mutual aid from several neighboring departments. There is also a call out for other departments, from around the region, to donate unused supplies.

"I want them (residents) to know they're covered, that we do have a truck, we do have a rescue, we are doing EMS runs." says If there is a structure fire we've got this truck and we'll have mutual aid."

KSP is urging anyone with information about the fire to give the agency a call.



UPDATE 9/19/13 @ 2 p.m.
BLAINE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Kentucky State Police are now investigating the fire at the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department as arson.

The fire that happened on September 12, damaged trucks and destroyed equipment.

KSP are still awaiting official word from the Kentucky State Fire Marshal's Office, but Trooper Michael Murriell tells WSAZ.com there are other circumstances that has the department working on the investigation.

"There's evidence of theft," says Trooper Murriell. "What's been reported missing are also items that would require more than one person to haul away."

KSP is urging anyone with information about the fire to give the agency a call.

BLAINE, Ky. (WSAZ) – An early morning fire has heavily damaged three fire trucks and destroyed firefighting equipment at the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire at the station was reported about 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

Blaine Fire Chief Butch Smith tells WSAZ.com that he spotted the fire after going to the station to investigate a call from a passerby about a water leak.

Crews from other parts of the county, as well as Johnson and Carter counties were called to help fight the fire.

A small tanker, “mini pump" and rescue truck belonging to the department were not damaged in the fire. They are all kept at a site about a mile from the station according to Chief Smith.

Smith does not know if the two engines and a tanker that were inside the station can be salvaged.

He says the steering wheel and dash are melted on the engine that is parked closest to office part of the station.

The inside of the fire station also has heavy fire damage.

Smith tells WSAZ.com that most of the fire was on the office side of the building.

There is no word right now how the fire started.

Chief Smith says the Red Bush and Webbville Fire Departments will handle Blaine calls in the near future.

BLAINE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A fire has been reported at the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department.

Lawrence County, Kentucky 911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com crews from other parts of the county, as well as Johnson and Carter counties have been called to help fight the fire.

The fire was reported just after 6:30 a.m.

No word on any injuries.

We have a crew headed to the scene.
