HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A fire at a commercial building in downtown Huntington had firefighters on high alert Saturday Morning.
The Tri-State Plating and Polishing building on Manchester Avenue and 20th Street caught fire about 10:30 a.m. Crews had the fire contained in an hour, but the bigger problem was the chemicals stored inside.
"There's concern, because there is hazardous material they use in the plating process," Huntington Fire Deputy Chief Brian Grieco told WSAZ.com.
Every firefighter who entered the building was tested to make sure they weren't contaminated. Nearby storm drains were also tested to make sure there were no leaks.
Darren DeMattie is a Lieutenant with the Huntington Fire Department. He is also on the West Virginia Regional Response Team -- a team that recently mapped out local buildings that could pose a risk if on fire. Tri-State Plating and Polishing was on that list, so firefighters knew what they were walking into before they even pulled up.
DeMattie tells WSAZ.com no chemicals were leaked. The fire was contained to one building. Firefighters say they must now monitor the building in case the roof or walls collapse, causing bigger problems.
