UPDATE: Arrest in Grocery Store Robbery

UPDATE 8/21/13
ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The man suspected of robbing Foodland in The Plains in Athens County earlier this month has been arrested.

Sheriff Patr Kelly says Michael J. Fette, 46, of Lancaster, was arrested in Huron County, Ohio following a robbery at a grocery store there.

Kelly says in both robberies, Fette entered the store and zip tied employees.

The Sheriff says Fette was arrested when he literally ran into arms of police as he ran from the store.

Officers had gone to the store to investigate a suspicious vehicle parked behind the store. The call to police was made by a person going through a dumpster at the rear of the store.

Sheriff Kelly says a 9mm handgun and the clothes used in all the robberies were seized when Fette was taken into custody.

He also had $30,000 from the Huron County store in his possession.

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Investigators say the suspect in an armed robbery at a grocery store in Athens County may be connected to multiple robberies in another Ohio county.

The robbery happened at the Foodland in The Plains just after the business closed for the night on Wednesday. This was just after 10 p.m.

Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly says the robber showed a handgun and tied up three employees with zip ties after having the workers take money out of a safe.

Sheriff Patrick Kelly says deputies had an initial person of interest, but that person has now been cleared of the robbery.

Kelly says the other robberies were in Pickaway County.

Additional surveillance pictures of the suspect were released Thursday.

The Sheriff says the suspect was first in the store Tuesday around closing time and told employees he lost his cell phone.

He returned Wednesday night and asked employees if he could look in the back of the store for his phone. The gunman then returned to the front of the store, pulled out a handgun.

Kelly says he fled the store in a four door light colored vehicle possibly a Hyundai Sonata or similar model vehicle. He was wearing a gray pullover long sleeve with a red ball cap.
