Help For W.Va. Families In Need a Phone Call Away

Posted: Fri 8:33 PM, Dec 21, 2012

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Fire trucks raced Friday night to the Huntington City Mission. There was no fire,no one trapped or injured.
The fire truck was a makeshift Santa Sleigh help deliver Santa and toys to more than 4 dozen families.

"It's what the holidays are all about," Capt. Robert Ray said. "There are children there who are so grateful, who are all smiles. There are also children, grateful enough they'll shed a tear. They'll break your heart."

While Christmas may be December 25th on the calendar, for a lot of agencies that help with needy families Christmas is technically over.

"Christmas is as done as it's going to get," said Sidney Polan with Cabell County's Information and Referral Office. "Christmas is going to go well for most people. We're going to have some big problems as time goes on. We're going to have more problems with food; we're going to have a lot of problem with utility bills. I think utilities will be the next big cause of homelessness."

For people who may need some sort of assistance, perhaps for the first time, and don't know where to turn -- 211 is the state's phone number for statewide assistance. An operator will direct you to the agency that may be able to assist you.

"Everyone's grateful for help, especially during the holiday," Polan says, "But it's important to remember, the need is here year round."
