Helping Eastern Kentucky Families Battle Asthma

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Health officials in eastern Kentucky are trying to recruit families to take part in a ground breaking study.

They are striving to target the problem of un-controlled asthma in children.

"We spend 90 percent of our day inside. " Holly West, with Eastern Kentucky Health, Inc. said. "One in 10, in Kentucky has asthma, but the numbers in the eastern part of the state are much higher."

West is looking for 100 families in eastern Kentucky to sign up.

She is searching for neighbors who live in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Elliott, Lawrence, Floyd and Pike counties.

"First, we will go into the home and we'll do a healthy home assessment," West said. "That will help us determine what the indoor environmental factors are."

Some of those environmental factors may surprise people. Health experts say even burning candles and incense can contribute to asthma problems.

"$62 million dollars is spent, in Kentucky, on asthma related health care," West said. "We're doing what we can to try to get it under control in children."
