Historic Kentucky Movie Theater Closing Doors Due to Rough Economy
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The rough economy has taken its toll on businesses around the region, and a historic movie theater in Kentucky is the latest victim.
The Strand Twin movie theater has been rolling film in Prestonsburg, Ky., for more than 60 years, but the final scene is approaching.
Declining ticket sales and digital upgrades that would cost more than $200,000 dollars are just too much to keep the old theater going.
The theater is Prestonsburg's only running movie theater, which means people will now have to hit the road to catch a flick. Ben Welch of Prestonsburg, says the theater is convenient for people in the area.
"It's a good place to go," Welch said. "You just don't want to drive to Paintsville, Pikeville, Ashland, Huntington. For people right around here that's got children, you can walk up the street."
If you want to see one last movie before the theater closes, there's still time. The last film will run Sunday, Jan. 6.
