Huntington Police Chief Returns from FBI Academy

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Police Chief Skip Holbrook is back in his office after being away for 10 weeks training at the FBI National Academy.

During his time away, he took several classes involving contemporary issues facing law enforcement including best practices for drug trafficking, along with ethics and decision making.

Holbrook earned 17 hours through the University of Virginia during the time he was at the FBI Academy.

The program had 267 people from 49 states and 27 countries.

Holbrook is the seventh Huntington officer to be selected during the last 40 years.

It's impressive because Holbrook says graduates of the National Academy represent only .01 percent of members of law enforcement.

"It was not unusual to run into people who have been attempting to be selected to attend the academy for 10 plus years, so the fact that we have had that many in the past, and since I've been here we've sent three and our goal is to continue to send someone every year," Holbrook explained.

The chief says he is back, re-energized, and looking forward to putting some new "best practices" to work that he learned while he was away.

"It was very revealing for me to be surrounded by like-minded people and be surrounded by your contemporaries, have an opportunity to hear that things that have been successful, best practices, that have worked, but also things that have not worked and why they have not worked and to importantly make sure we don't go down that same path," Holbrook said.

On Monday evening, Huntington Police Capt. Hank Dial was recognized at the Huntington City Council meeting for serving as acting chief while Holbrook was away.
