HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Huntington Police Department has a new tool to fight crime and keep you safe.
The "Isaac Mitchell" is the department's first-ever boat. It is named for the first Marshal of Huntington who was killed in the line of duty.
The boat was paid for entirely through grant money, and the process has taken five-years.
In addition to patrolling when recreational boaters are on the water, the boat will help with evidence recovery and patrolling the 20 miles of shore. With three bridges in the department's jurisdiction, there are areas that are tricky to gain access.
During the last few weeks, HPD members have been working with members of the U.S. Coast Guard in Huntington to familiarize officers with the boat.
The hope is that it will be on the water by Memorial Day weekend.
