Kanawha Co. Proposal Would Require Playing Time for All Middle School Athletes

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Squeaks and whistles in middle school gymnasiums means it's basketball season. However, what sometimes happens during these games has some parents calling foul.

"Children often times will game after game, sit the bench," said parent and school board member Becky Jordan.

Jordan believes this treatment is unfair.

"This is not the age to have superstars," Jordan said.

At Monday's school board meeting, Jordan proposed creating a new rule that would mean all middle school students get some playing time.

"Middle school is an age where we need to engage our kids more," Jordan said.

She said children who feel rejected face bullying, which can cause them to drop out.

However, not all parents agree.

Jason Waezelle's daughter plays for Dupont. He says middle-schoolers are at the age where equal opportunity doesn't always mean equal outcome.

"They're going to go for their first job interview, they're going to ask their first prom date out, and they're going to be told no," Waezelle said, "and it's something they have to learn to deal with."

While Waezelle's daughter isn't warming the bench this year, he argues that time on the court came with hard work off it.

"She paid her dues," Waezelle said. "She sat on the bench for two years and did the things she was supposed to do."

It's a tough call to be made at the board room table that will have an affect on the playing surface for these young athletes.

Specific details of this proposal have not been outlined. It will be discussed in further detail at the Dec. 19 meeting.
