LINCOLN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two men claiming to be police put some real fear into a married couple. Troopers say they were victims of a violent home invasion Friday morning.
It happened about 6 a.m. Friday at a home in the Sumerco area of Lincoln County.
“I opened the door and let him in. He had a gun and asked me where my wife was,” Gary Huffman, the homeowner, said.
Huffman led the two men he thought were police upstairs to the bedroom.
“They made me lay down there and zip tied our hands and feet,” Huffman said.
That's when he realized the so-called cops were actually criminals. After tying up his wife, Sharon Huffman, Gary says they forced him back downstairs and led him straight to the safe where he keeps his cash.
“They took all of it,” Gary Huffman said.
Troopers say the suspects stole about $2,500 before forcing Gary back upstairs and tying him up, as well.
He says they then ransacked the house, stole some valuable knives, prescription medications and the couple's truck.
“By the time the victims were able to get themselves free, he was long gone,” Trooper S.L. Bartram said.
The Huffmans are trying to piece their lives back together, but it isn't easy.
“Everything was in our wallets. They took it all. We have no driver’s license, no Social Security cards,” Sharon Huffman said.
“It's pretty bad when you're not even safe in your own home, but they don't have to worry,” Gary Huffman said. “Next time I’ll be waiting on them. If they're smart, they better hope police find them before I do.”
The Huffmans say the men put bags over their heads, so they weren't able to get a good description.
West Virginia State Police were able to get some fingerprints, which have been sent off to a lab.
The truck the men got away with is a gold 2004 Chevy Silverado. The West Virginia license plate number is 4LL866.
