Locker Rooms Flooded
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Flooding problems have caused headaches at one school, but it's not because of the weather.
Joe Brumfield, assistant principal of Wayne High School, says a power outage Wednesday kicked off the sewer treatment system and caused water to back up into the locker rooms, which are beneath ground level.
The locker rooms were cleaned and power washed Friday, but for their second home game, players couldn’t use them because they're still damp from the cleaning.
"We didn't want wet tennis shoes and kids slipping around," Brumfield said.
For their game Friday against Herbert Hoover, the players changed in the cafeteria.
The gym isn't connected to the school, so players had to walk outside in the cold to get back and forth.
"You're already hot in there,” sophomore player Tucker Watts said. “You're sweating. You get sick. I'm kind of sick right now because of it."
What's especially frustrating for the younger players is that if the bond levy in Wayne County had passed in December, their school would have gotten a new gym and new locker rooms.
School officials say the locker rooms will be usable in time for Wayne's next game.
