UPDATE 3/12/13 @ 6:40 p.m
LOGAN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man who police say is responsible for a standoff lasting several hours remains in the hospital, and from there, he'll be taken straight to jail.
“There were like 15 more cop cars come up behind us and block us in. They were all laying on the ground with their assault rifles,” John Madison, a neighbor, said. “Some guy was peaking out the window.
That man was Gregory Aldridge. His aunt, who lives next door, called 911 and said he was trying to break in and threatened to kill her.
When police showed up, they say he threatened to kill them and then ran inside his house.
“We tried to make contact with him a couple of times. He just wasn't having it,” West Virginia State Police Trooper Silas Belt said.
So troopers went inside to arrest him.
“He pulled a knife. We ordered him to put the knife down. He didn't. We managed to struggle and fight with him until we could get the knife from him. We managed to get the knife from him and he still fought,” Belt said.
WSAZ.com contacted the Logan County Courthouse and found Aldridge’s criminal past goes back to 1993.
This is the third time he's been accused of using violence against police -- once in 2010 and again the next year.
“Any time a weapon's involved -- whether it's a hammer, a gun, a knife, a stick, a bat or whatever -- it just adds that much more stress,” Belt said. “You don't want to see anybody get hurt. At the same time you want to make sure you go home at the end of your shift and make sure your guys go home.”
At last check Aldridge was in critical condition.
WSAZ.com called the hospital to see if any of his family wanted to comment, but so far there has been no response.
Aldridge faces a list of charges that include assault and battery on a police officer, domestic assault, attempted burglary, brandishing a deadly weapon, obstructing and cultivation of marijuana.
Police say Gregory Aldridge, 38, tried to break into an elderly woman's home and threatened to kill her.
When police arrived, he threatened an officer and took off to his house along Charles Street. Officers entered the house and arrested him.
They say Aldridge swung a knife at the officers before they managed to get him in custody.
He has been taken to the hospital.
He faces several charges including assault and battery on a police officer, burglary and brandishing a deadly weapon.
