DHHR offers tip for disinfecting water before consuming

Many residents across the state are still without power nearly a week after the destructive windstorms last Friday.  Officials with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources say that many residents across the state continue to be under local boil water advisories.  Areas with no water, low water pressure or cloudy water need to properly disinfect their water before consuming.

Residents who remain under a local boil water advisory and who are unable to boil their water should disinfect their water using household bleach in the following manner:

Add eight drops or one-eighth teaspoon of regular unscented household laundry bleach (5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite) to each gallon of clear water.  Stir and allow the water to stand for at least 30 minutes before using.    Water should have a distinct taste or smell of chlorine.  If chlorine taste or smell is not present, add eight more drops or one-eighth teaspoon of bleach and allow to stand for 15 minutes before using.  Boiling water for one minute is preferred over using bleach.

    Relief center moves:
Because of the power outage in Kanawha City as a result of Sunday’s thunderstorm, the City has moved its emergency relief shelter to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. Managers say four families displaced by the recent storms stayed there Sunday night.

    Pools closed:
Power remains out at both the Cato and Kanawha City pools. As a result, the King Center pool is the only city pool that will be open today. Whenever power is restored to the other pools, it may take another day to clean and prepare them for public use.

    Recreation at community centers:
Because of the power outage in Kanawha City and use of the King Center as a relief shelter, those two centers are closed for public use. The North Charleston Community Center and Roosevelt Neighborhood Center are open on their usual schedules.

    Contractors:
Charleston Building Commissioner Tony Harmon is warning residents to be careful of non-registered or out-of-state contractors that have arrived in the city under the guise of helping residents and businesses affected by the recent storms. Legitimate contractors should be registered with both the State of West Virginia and City of Charleston. Anyone with questions about registration status or requirements can call the Charleston Building Commission: 304-348-6833.

Kanawha County citizens who have had damage to their structures as a result of the storm events that began on June 29th, need to call the Kanawha County Planning Office at 304-357-0570 to report the damage for the County damage assessment.

Walmart has donated $38,500 in food, water and other supplies in the past week to various West Virginia state and private organizations to assist victims of the recent storms. The donations include truckloads of supplies to the State of West Virginia, local fire departments and private food banks.

“Walmart wants to help the victims of the recent storms in West Virginia by donating large quantities of food and water to the most severely impacted families and individuals,” said Kate Mora, Regional General Manager for Walmart in West Virginia. “Walmart believes in helping those in need during tough times,” Mora said.

As of 8:30 a.m. Friday, 40,958 customers are still without power in Kanawha County. Statewide more than 150,000 are still without power.

Cool water will be available at each cooling station and shelter in the county. Crews urge you to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Kanawha County Emergency Management has received a shipment of ice. The county is in the process of working out logistics to set up locations where the public can access the ice throughout the county. More information to be announced later this morning.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The 4th of July brings little relief from the heat for thousands of storm victims who are still without power.

More than 100,000 West Virginia AEP residents have gotten their power back, but that still leaves more than 300,000 in the dark. AEP estimates that power will come back on by July 7. At least 313,000 are without power in Ohio and 16,000 are without power in Kentucky.

AEP is asking residents who are using generators to contact the company.

According to AEP officials, generators can cause backfeed on the electric distribution system, creating hazards for line crews as they work to restore power.

Anyone using a generator is asked to call AEP Ohio at 800-672-2231 immediately.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia fire officials say they're worried that people may be planning to celebrate July 4th with fireworks, and they're strongly advising against it.

Deputy State Fire Marshal Carol Nolte says the risk of fire is too high in the aftermath of a storm that still has nearly 348,000 people waiting for power.

Conditions across the state are extremely dry. The brown, crunchy lawns were already fuel, but Nolte says the downed trees and limbs add even more potential tinder.

At the same time, water is in short supply in many areas. Nolte says several fire departments have already called, saying they worry they won't have enough water to douse any fires that start.

Fire marshals also warn people not to burn trees or any other debris from the storm.
