SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One man is behind bars after police say he attacked his girlfriend's son.

Eric Richmond, 42, has been charged with child abuse with risk of serious injury and malicious wounding.

Police say Richmond allegedly choked the boy after he had been suspended from school and made him undress.

According to criminal complaints, Richmond also used a belt to hit the child on his back and legs. This left several bruises.

When informed of the news, neighbors, who constantly saw the child outside playing, were saddened.

"It hits home thinking about a child going through that," said Sherri Hines, also a parent. "I mean, it's devastating for a child."

Richmond is currently being held in the South Central Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
