UPDATE 12/5/13 @ 5:30 p.m.
WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- It's a crime that still leaves members of the Scioto County Sheriff's Department in disbelief.

"It's still shocking," Detective Denver Triggs said. "It's still shocking even when you work in this field."

Detective Triggs is still struggling to comprehend what happened at this house in West Portsmouth Sunday. Police say 29-year-old Joshua Horton viciously attacked his 67-year-old grandmother. But it's why that has many stunned.

"It started over cigarette tobacco," Triggs said. "The grandson had purchased a type of cigarette tobacco that wasn't the normal kind they use."

Police say when the grandmother confronted Horton, he went into a fit of rage, hitting and choking her before pouring kerosene all over her.

"He threatened to light her on fire," Triggs said. "He said he was going to burn her and the house down. Some of her hair had been pulled out and was on her clothing. The top of her clothing was saturated in kerosene."

Horton has been charged with felonious assault, but police say he will likely face additional charges. Investigators are just glad this case didn't have a tragic ending.

"This could have been worse," Triggs said, "and were thankful it was not. Hopefully this young man will get some help for that temper and we'll keep him off the streets so this doesn't happen again."

Detective Triggs visited the grandmother Wednesday. He says she has been released from the hospital, but says she is still in a lot of pain.

Horton's father didn't want to be on camera, but tells WSAZ.com that he and the grandmother do not want Horton to go to jail. They say he has a drug problem, and needs help in a rehab facility.

Horton is being held in the Scioto County Jail on a $100,000.00 bond.
