UPDATE: Man Recovering in Hospital after ATV Crash in Kanawha County

UPDATED 11/11/13 @ 5:55 p.m.
DUNBAR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man in Kanawha County has a long road to recovery ahead -- after crashing his ATV on Sunday night.

It happened about 6:30 p.m., not far off of Woodrum Lane in Dunbar.

Friends say Mike Ferrell's ATV slipped into a steep ravine, causing Ferrell to break several ribs and injure his head and back.

Ferrell was able to speak with a friend on the phone long enough to tell him he could hear traffic and see a white building, but then his phone died. That means they couldn't use it to track him.

Family and friends had been searching for a couple of hours when they realized more help was needed.

“We looked for about an hour and a half up on top. We had his wife blowing horns and us hollering, but we couldn't locate him,” Rick Lander, Ferrell’s close friend and neighbor, said. “So I told her to call 911 and we can meet up with the fire department."

Finally, about 2:30 a.m. Monday, a state trooper was able to hear Ferrell yelling for help. He's still recovering in the hospital and is expected to be OK.
