UPDATE 11/12/13 @ 8:45 p.m.
INEZ, Ky. (WSAZ) --The man arrested and charged with the murder of his cousin and his cousin's wife listened in court Tuesday as prosecutors and detectives outlined their case against him.

Orie Spence Jr., 29, is charged with the shooting deaths of Edgar Hedrick, 40, and April Hedrick, 37, of Tomahawk, Ky.

Authorities say Spence shot and killed the Hedricks at their home along Rockhouse Road on Nov. 1.

Kentucky State Police say the suspected murder weapon was found on Spence's parents' property, and that his mother made statements to 911 dispatchers and detectives that led troopers to charge Spence with the murders.

KSP Detective Chris Phillips testified during Tuesday’s preliminary hearing that when prosecutors asked if the mother indicated why Spence killed the Hedricks, Phillips replied, "There was a statement made by the mother that April and Edgar Hedrick possibly had hepatitis and had transmitted it to Mr. Spence."

Detectives say Spence also claimed he was having sexual relations with April Hedrick.

"He alleged that he did shoot Edgar and it was in a self-defense scenario," testified Phillips.

Officials said Spence went on to say, Edgar shot April from behind and then was involved in an altercation with Spence, which led to him shooting Edgar in self defense.

However, detectives say the evidence is inconsistent with Spence's story. "At the time she was shot, she was eating," Phillips said.
The prosecutor replied, "Noodles or something...and so she was not shot in the back?". Phillips replied, "She was shot in the front, under the chin. So it was inconsistent with what we found at the scene."

Following the testimony, the judge sent the case to the grand jury.

The next grand jury in Martin County is scheduled to meet Dec. 5.

Spence remains in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center on $2 million bond.

UPDATE 11/2/13 @ 6:45 p.m.
MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) – A family is torn and a man is in jail after police say he shot and killed a man and woman Friday night. Family members say the man and woman were his cousin and his cousin's wife.

Kentucky State Police troopers and detectives got a call Friday night about a shooting on Rock House Road in the Tomahawk community of Martin County. They later arrested and charged Orie Spence, Jr. with two counts of murder in connection with the shooting deaths of Edgar and April Hedrick.

Anthony Spence, 12, lives next door to his father’s cousins, the Hedricks, on weekends and said he saw an ambulance pull in Friday night.

“I just thought one of them overdosed or done something bad like hurt [themselves],” Anthony Spence said. “I didn't think killing was in there.”

The family says the two men, Hedrick and Spence, Jr., were close friends.

“They were all family. They were so close growing up and everything. We were told they were like best friends growing up,” Kalista Spence, 13, said. “Everybody on this hollow is family. Whether by marriage or blood, we're all family. And it's hard to believe that somebody would kill their first or second cousin, and nobody knows why.”

Kalista and Anthony’s father, who is a cousin of both Hedrick and Spence, Jr., said the Hedricks were having a party this weekend for Edgar’s 40th birthday, but he didn’t go because his kids were with him for the weekend. He said he didn’t know what happened, but he believes this may have been drug-related.

Spence, Jr. is being held at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
