Power Outage Taking Toll on March Tornado Victims

WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The extended power outage has been tough on so many people, but it's just the latest in a long line of trials for one family in Wayne County.

Sharon Adkins was at her mother's funeral when a tornado hit back in March. Sharon says that funeral may have saved hey life.

Her house in Kiahsville was destroyed.

Losing their childhood home right after losing their mother was a nightmare for the family.

"It's very hard,” Sharon said. “I cry almost every day, especially when you go home and you pass what used to be my mother's house.”

Much of their time since then has been focused on cleanup.

Now, going a week without electricity has them feeling exasperated.

"I feel like I'm just about to the end of my rope,” Sharon said. “One more thing and I'm going to be pushed over the edge. I don't know how much more I can take."

Sharon's been staying with her sister Sheila Coburn after losing her own home to the severe weather.

They say the scorching heat has made it really miserable, and they're wishing this year would give them a break.

"It's been one thing after another,” Sheila said. “Hopefully it won't last too much longer."

Facing tough times just after losing their mother, they'd like to know what words of wisdom she'd share, but still, just talking about her isn't easy.

"It's still too hard,” Sheila said. “We do sometimes, but it's still too hard."

Sharon says the family has been so busy with cleanup from that tornado, they hadn't gotten around to burying their mother yet.

They'd planned to do it this weekend because it would have been their parents' anniversary, but now because of the power outage, it had to be postponed again.
