Mayor Proposes 5k Fee to Offset Costs to City

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Throughout the spring and summer, there are almost endless 5k runs.

The end result is generally to raise money for a good cause, but Charleston City leaders fear it is costing the taxpayers money.

As things stand now, it's free to host a 5k, and the city of Charleston absorbs the cost for police officers who block off the streets and handle crowd control.

At the city council meeting Tuesday night, Mayor Danny Jones proposed creating a $500 fee to help offset those costs.

"We are going to implement minimum fees to basically cover our costs," City Manager David Moulgaard said, "so if there is a standardized race and we are required to provide more manpower to cover the streets, at least the city isn't subsidizing these events."

If Council approves the measure, it could go into effect in the next few months.

Jones says in some cases the city could help cover those costs, but that would only happen on a case-by-case basis.
