Meet Kanawha County's Newest Magistrate

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- "Well, to be fair on every case whatever comes before me, I don't know what other goal you could have, you know," said Mike Sisson, magistrate-elect in Kanawha County.

Mike Sisson has always protected and served.

"Yeah, I knew early on that I was going to be somehow associated with criminal justice," Sisson said.

He was a St. Albans police officer from 1980 to 1987, then a security officer at Union Carbide until 2009.

Since 2009, he has been a process deputy with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department.

"Just any kind of paper process that comes from the court that needs to be served, we're the ones that take care of it," Sisson said.

On Tuesday, he became the top vote getter for a Kanawha County magistrate seat.

"But, really, a magistrate position requires common sense," Sisson said. "It requires life experiences that you can apply to what you're ruling on, and it's really what I just said a minute ago. If you're a good communicator, if you're a good listener -- and it all boils down to just being fair and trying to do what's right."

Now, it’s his experience that serves him.

"It's a busy place, and there's stuff that goes on down there that a lot of people probably couldn't deal with," Sisson said. "But with a law enforcement background, you have an idea what you're up against."
