Mother: Punishment Not Enough in Sexual Assault of Middle School Daughter

MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl at Milton Middle School has a mother speaking out about the disciplinary action against the teenage boy she said is responsible.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said the boy’s temporary suspension isn’t enough. The boy is expected to return to school Tuesday.

The boy allegedly touched the girl inappropriately and said some derogatory things to her. The boy originally was suspended for three days. That was later changed to 10 days after the girl’s family complained to school officials. It was the most serious punishment – short of expulsion.

“I don't feel it was handled appropriately,” the girl’s mother said. “I would like the boy to not be in school with her anymore.”

The family has filed criminal charges, alleging sexual assault, and is in the process of getting a restraining order. But a piece of paper doesn't keep the boy out of school.

Todd Alexander with Cabell County Schools said the district did as much as it possibly could.

“There are processes in place and state and federal guidelines that we have to follow,” Alexander said. “We will do everything on our end to make sure that nothing like this happens again from this particular student and there are preventative measures for all students, but we will try to make sure this is the last time that this happens again.”

The mother said, “It’s very frustrating to me because I feel like they are sending a message to other boys that, "Hey, this isn't a big deal.’ “

The family says they've filed charges with the Milton Police Department. We have called the department twice to follow up, but have been unable to speak with anyone there.
