NEW ALBANY, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio doctor charged with raping and killing a pregnant woman has pleaded not guilty.

A judge set a $1 million bond Thursday for Dr. Ali Salim, an amount the Delaware County prosecutor expected Salim could pay.

The judge also said the man from New Albany will be on house arrest and must wear a GPS monitoring device.

Salim is suspected of killing Deanna Ballman and her unborn child last summer after she responded to an online job ad he placed.

Prosecutors had asked for a $5 million bond, arguing that Salim mistreated Ballman's corpse and that the violence was not isolated.

Prosecutors also said Salim, who is from Pakistan, is a flight risk because of the amount of evidence to be presented against him.

NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A medical doctor with ties to our region was arrested Wednesday, accused of murdering a pregnant woman.

Dr. Ali Salim was arrested in New Albany after he was indicted on nine charges including murder, kidnapping, rape and corruption with drugs.

The charges are in connection with the death of Deanna Ballman and her unborn child. Ballman was nine months pregnant when she was found dead of a heroin overdose in August of last year.

Investigators say Ballman was the mother of two children and was trying to find work by cleaning houses through ads that had been placed on craigslist.

Salim is still a licensed physician in Ohio. He most recently practiced in Mount Vernon and Jackson, Ohio.
