Guards Placed on Leave Following Inmate Suicide

LUCASVILLE Ohio (AP) -- The state says it has placed three prison guards on leave while it investigates the circumstances around an inmate's weekend suicide.

Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Smith says it's not unusual to investigate inmate suicides, including the actions of guards on the unit where it occurred.

She says the investigation will review whether guards followed prison procedures.

Smith says a 48-year-old inmate was found hanged on Feb. 11 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.

Smith says the man who'd been in prison since 1999, was convicted of aggravated murder out of Marion County and had a release date in 2015.
