UPDATE 11/27/13 @ 9 p.m.
CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- What was to be a time of giving thanks has turned into a time of grieving for one family.

Headed in opposite directions on Route 2, two cars collided head-on about 4 p.m. Wednesday near the Mason-Cabell County line.

The driver of the southbound car did not survive, Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas told WSAZ.com.

The driver and passenger of the northbound car were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Firefighters had to cut part of that car off to get them out, McComas said.

Valerie Tomlinson was driving home from work in Huntington when she got stuck behind the accident.

She says it’s impossible to imagine what the families are going through at a time when they were likely, as most everyone else, getting ready to celebrate the holiday.

"My heart breaks for these people and their families, especially during this time of year,” she said. “We're all together and thankful for what we have. Unfortunately someone lost their life, so my heart does break for them."

An off-duty Cabell County Sheriff's deputy happened to be driving behind the northbound car and witnessed the accident. That deputy has given a statement as to what happened, McComas said.

The driver who was hospitalized also was able to give a statement. However, investigators are not releasing what they said just yet.

The sheriff says weather is not believed to have been a factor.

Route 2 reopened just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
