Parents Voice Concerns about High School Band Uniforms

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- They say appearance is everything, but for Williamson native Pam Surber, her son's band uniforms at Mingo Central High School don't exactly make her proud to be a band mom.

"If they would want to compete, they couldn't do it in something like this," Surber said.

Surber is one of a number of parents who attended a Mingo County School Board meeting Tuesday night to voice her opinion on the high school's band uniforms, or to her, lack thereof.

"We shouldn't be here tonight,” Surber said. “We shouldn't have to do this. This should have just been automatic last year, and they need to show the kids that they matter."

When the school opened two years ago, the band was given polos and sweatshirts. A lot of parents were upset with the school’s lack of commitment to the band.

Superintendent Randy Keathley and board members says it's all in good time.

"It goes back to the old saying, it takes a village to raise a child and that is what we saw this evening is the comings together of different entities for a common goal of supporting arts in the schools," Keathley said.

It’s a common goal parents and board members hope to reach soon. One board member pledged $500 on the spot just to get the ball rolling. That would be about the price of one band uniform.
