PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Parkersburg man is being charged in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy.
According to a release from the Parkersburg Police Department, Matthew Lamp, 29, of Parkersburg, W.Va., is being charged with death of a child by parent, guardian or custodian.
On Sunday, officers responded to CCMC in reference to a seriously injured child, according to the release. When officers got the the hospital, the mother of the injured child told officers that he was accidentally hurt while playing at her home.
The child was later transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown and placed on life support.
According to the release, the 3-year-old passed away about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Several detectives traveled to Morgantown to further their investigation.
Lamp, who was incarcerated in North Central Regional Jail on unrelated charges, was interviews at the Parkersburg Police headquarters Thursday afternoon. According to the release, detectives and prosecutors decided to officially charged Lamp after the interview in connection with the death of the child.
According to the release, Lamp admitted to striking the child and causing substantial injuries to his body on Wednesday.
No charges have been filed against the mother at this point in time.
Lamp is being held without bond and could face 10 to 40 years in prison if convicted.
