DUNBAR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Dunbar Toll Bridge is back open traveling both directions and traffic is flowing.

For several weeks, work was being done to inspect and fix parts of the bridge, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.

Crews tried to limit the delays and closures to nights and weekends.

Police in Dunbar say all of the work is finished and no future delays are expected.

ORIGINAL STORY
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- South Charleston to Dunbar is just a quick and easy drive across the Kanawha River, but, now it may not be that easy.

Through the end of March, one lane of the Dunbar Toll Bridge will be shut down from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from dawn to dusk on Saturday and Sunday for inspections.

"These are federally mandated inspections so we don't have the authority to just say, 'hey, we'll wait,' because there could be a significant safety concern and we don't want anything to happen and say, 'well, we held off because the public had to be held up in traffic," Carrie Bly of the West Virginia Department of Highways said.

Even with just one lane shut down for just part of the day, traffic could be more of a headache than otherwise due to the blast of the bridge up the road which once connected Nitro to St. Albans.

"We certainly understand that people are concerned and are downright frustrated about it, especially those people that live in Nitro and are already facing delays because of the Dick Henderson Bridge being closed," Bly said.

That bridge was demolished last month and the new bridge won’t open until November.

"Over 500 major bridges in Kanawha County, so we have thousands of bridges statewide that we have to go and make sure that are safe for the traveling public,” Bly said.

And it’s that, your safety that concerns the DOH and workers are asking for your patience.
