BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Early Wednesday morning, a fight over a woman ended in murder. It's turned a family upside down in Boone County.
It happened about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Jeffrey area.
Roy Gillam, 23, was killed after getting into a fight with the suspect Brian King.
“It was over a woman," King said.
According to a criminal complaint, King had been in the car with Gillams's girlfriend, and Gillam found them. A fight broke out, and he was stabbed.
"It's a big misunderstand," King said.
Scotty Gillam has lived next to his nephew, Roy, all his life. Now, he's left with only memories and pictures.
“I'll miss him greatly. This is a great shock to me and my family," Scotty Gillam said.
He says Roy had been dating Lori Stevenson for about a year, but the relationship had been rocky.
"She just needed to go on and move along. That's kind of where I've left it," Scotty Gillam said.
Roy was known for standing his ground.
"He had some backbone about him. Well, he just stood firm. What you'd see is what you'd get. There wasn't nothing hidden about him. He was real. He's what you call real people. We stand on that," Scotty Gillam said.
In this time of tragedy, Scotty is remaining strong while also grieving a young life cut short.
The family plans to hold a funeral for Roy.
King is charged with second-degree murder. His preliminary hearing has been set for March 5.
Brian Lee King, 38, of Ashboro, North Carolina, was arrested and charged in the death of Roy Gillam III, of Jeffrey.
When deputies arrived on scene along Hewett Creek Road in Jeffrey about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, they found Gillam lying in the middle of road with a small puncture wound in his chest, according to the criminal complaint.
Gilliam was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Gillam's girlfriend, Lori Stevenson, was at the scene along with King.
Boone County Sheriff's Deputies say Stevenson told them Gillam stopped them in the road with his vehicle and Gillam and King started fighting. Stevenson told deputies she drove up the road to turn around and when she returned she found King on top of Gillam in the driver's seat of Gillam's truck.
Stevenson put Gillam on the ground and tried to give him CPR when she noticed he had been stabbed.
According to the criminal complaint, King later admitted to deputies he did get into a fight with Gillam and he acknowledges seeing a knife, but was unaware of how Gillam was stabbed.
Deputies tell WSAZ.com the fight was over a woman.
King was arraigned in Boone County Magistrate Court early Wednesday morning. He was in what appeared to be a hospital gown, but he was never taken for treatment.
During his arraignment, the magistrate set King's bond at $200,000 cash only.
Deputies say King's clothes were processed as evidence so he was given other clothing to wear.

A fight was reported to 911 about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday along Hewett Creek Road in Jeffrey.
When Boone County Sheriff's Deputies arrived on scene they found the victim in the road.
Chief Deputy Chad Barker tells WSAZ.com the victim and Brian King got into a fight in the road when King stabbed the victim. King was still on scene when deputies arrived.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
King was taken into custody without incident. Deputies say King will be charged with murder. He's from Ashboro, North Carolina.
The victim's name has not been released, but deputies say he is from Jeffrey.
King is expected to be arraigned on the murder charge about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Deputies are still on scene investigating the case.

A Boone County 911 dispatcher told WSAZ.com that it happened at 2:14 a.m Wednesday along Hewlett Creek Road.
Few details are being released but the dispatcher did say the victim was taken to Boone Memorial and one person was taken into custody.
The Boone County Sheriff's department is handling the investigation.
