Police Crack Down on Speeding in Construction Zone

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are cracking down on speeders through the interstate construction zone in Huntington, and tickets are costing plenty.

Some drivers are seeing tickets as high as $400 to $500. Fines in construction zones are increased by $100.

Huntington Police officers have stepped up enforcement since an accident last month.

A man was thrown from his vehicle, only to be hit by oncoming traffic, and officers say speeding through the area can only increase the danger.

"If there's a problem in this area, there's no where for a motorist to exit the road and get to a safe place," said Cpl. Gary Queen.

Officers say they are ticketing dozens of people each day because so few people abide by the 50 mph limit in that area.
