UPDATE 4/23/13 @ 11:15 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Just days after a brutal beating and robbery, doctors upgraded John “Benton” Dolin’s condition from critical to stable.
On Friday, police found Dolin of Boone County in an alley behind 200 Capitol Street in Charleston. He had been beaten, robbed and suffered severe head injuries from the attack.
Dolin’s family said Tuesday they’re optimistic about Benton making a full recovery.
“We're feeling really good,” his brother Mike Dolin said. “The first day when we heard the news, he was in really bad shape and we weren't sure of his motor skills.”
His family said Benton is now walking and answering questions. They're unsure, though, if he remembers any details about his attack.
Dolin’s family said it wasn't just his money the suspects stole -- they took something from Benton money can't buy.
"The day before this happened, my grandfather died,” Mike Dolin said.
Benton was unable to attend his grandfather’s funeral on Saturday because he was in the hospital in critical condition.
Mike said despite Benton’s head injuries, he's still sharp-witted.
“Some lady came in ... and asked him if it was 7 p.m., and seven hours passed. What time would it be, and I was counting on my fingers, and he answered it before me,” Mike said with a chuckle.
Authorities tell WSAZ they have no leads on suspects, and surveillance hasn't helped much .
Police said they hope once Benton fully recovers, he can clue them in on who hurt him. Until then -- his family, friends and even police wait for his speedy recovery.
UPDATE 4/19/13 @ 6:30 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Boone County man was in critical condition Friday afternoon at CAMC after police say he was beaten and robbed in downtown Charleston.
Charleston Police found the victim, John Dolin of Peytona, in an alleyway behind 200 Capitol Street.
“His wallet was lying there near him and was empty,” Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper said. “At this point, we're just hoping that we can retrace the victim's steps and that we find some video and that leads us to the suspect.”
Police said Dolin was last seen about midnight at Sam’s Uptown Café along Capitol Street, but he wasn’t discovered until 6:30 Friday morning.
Tammy Kerpshaw works across the street from where Dolin was found.
“As a mother, I would just be distraught and not knowing what happened, how it happened or who did it,” Kerpshaw said.
“He was well at the time and appeared to be by himself,” Cooper said.
Police are currently looking into surveillance from local businesses to help them identify the person or people responsible for the crime.
The case is being investigated as a robbery and malicious wounding case.
