UPDATE 5/16/12 @ 10 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A mom and dad are in jail after police say they left their three young children home alone in the middle of the night while they went to burglarize a home.
29-year-old Amanda Ogden says being locked up in jail has made her rethink her decision-making.
"I just regret what I did,” she said. “I'm ashamed of it."
The charges are that a little after 2 a.m. Tuesday she and her husband, Dustin Ogden, also 29, stole a water heater from a house along Primrose Avenue in Huntington. Police were called to the scene where they found the Ogdens.
They also found cut copper pipes in the area. Police say the couple was going to take the items to a scrap yard, but Amanda says they were taking the water heater because they couldn't afford to pay their gas bill.
"I was trying to do something for my kids, which I knew was illegal,” she said. “I was trying to help my kids have hot water."
The couple lived nine blocks away on 5th Street where police say the Ogdens left their 9-month-old, 2-year-old, and 5-year-old children home alone.
Amanda says there was someone staying with the kids during the burglary. She says it was a friend of the family, but she can't remember how to pronounce his last name.
Vicki Curtis is Amanda's father's girlfriend. She lives next door to the Ogdens.
She came out early Tuesday morning when she saw police going into the home.
"From what I saw, there wasn't anyone here with the kids," she said.
Amanda says she’s regretting her choice to steal and hoping her kids will be OK while she serves time in jail.
"I feel empty,” she said. “I just wish I could change it, but you can't turn back time."
Both parents are charged with two counts of burglary and three counts of child endangerment.
The kids are now staying with their grandmother. Child Protective Services will decide in a week where they will end up staying.
Amanda says they chose that house to burglarize because they used to live there.
Dustin Ogden, 29, and Amanda Ogden, 29, both of Huntington, face multiple charges after being arrested by Huntington Police early Tuesday morning.
According to the criminal complaint, just after 2 a.m., police responded to a possible burglary at a residence in the 1400-block of Primrose Avenue.
Officers say they found a water heater from the residence sitting by the defendant’s truck. The couple was then located inside a connecting residence.
According to the police report, it was not until the couple got to police headquarters that they told officers their nine-month-old, two-year-old and five-year-old kids were home alone.
The couple lived some nine blocks away from where the alleged burglary happened.
Each are charged with two counts of burglary and three counts of child endangerment.
Both are in the Western Regional Jail.
