NEW INFO: Vandals to Blame for Major Water Damage at Thomas Memorial

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A water leak that caused thousands of dollars in damage at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston -- was caused by a vandal.

Hospital officials say earlier this month, someone unscrewed the cap off of a water line and then opened up the value.

The damage from the water leak is expected to cost more than $100,000 to repair.

So far, no arrests have been made.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a sprinkler system malfunction at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

The incident was reported at the clinical pavilion at Thomas Memorial Hospital about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators tell a water line malfunctioned in the hospital, spraying water through the building. The Pavilion is a multiple-story building that is part of the hospital complex.

A spokesperson with Thomas Memorial Hospital tells the hospital will operate as normal on Wednesday. Paige Johnson says there was water damage to the inside building, but mostly cosmetic. Most of the damage was contained to carpet and ceiling tiles.

Johnson says the incident didn't affect any patients or disrupt the care of patients at the hospital.

Crews are still cleaning up the mess from Wednesday night's incident.

The incident was reported just after 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 4600 block of MacCorkle Avenue.

Sprinklers are going off, but crews haven’t been able to find an actual fire.

The Pavilion, a multiple-story building, is part of the Thomas Memorial Hospital complex. It contains several offices.
