PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A mother and father from Prestonsburg have pleaded not guilty to charges they abused their young sons, ages 7 and 9.
Danh Huynh, 36, and Holly Le, 39, were each arraigned on two counts of criminal abuse of a child under 12 during a hearing in Floyd County District Court Wednesday morning.
Each pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the arrest warrants from last month, the two intentionally abused their two minor children by cruel punishment that included striking the children with sticks while they maintained positions that required them to hold heavy objects above their heads for up the to three hours. The warrant also says the punishment sometimes included the children urinating and/or defecating on themselves.
The parents' attorney, Ned Pillersdorf, tells WSAZ.com the couple are natives of Vietnam and have lived here for 15-20 years.
Pillersdorf says the incident may be a misunderstanding due to cultural standards on how parents discipline their children in other cultures.
"The Huynhs are obviously from a different culture, and we're concerned there may be some misunderstanding as to cultural standards," Pillersdorf said. "And there are certainly some language barrier issues involved in this case."
A preliminary hearing for the parents is set for Dec. 10.
