PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) – The mix of rainy and sunny weather Friday did not keep crowds away from Hillbilly Days in Pikeville, Ky.
Many people said they’ve been coming for years and say the morning rain was just a small damper on an event they look forward to all year.
“Tell them to come on, regardless of rain. Put you a jacket on and come on,” Johnny Baisden said.
Baisden and his brother come each year from Logan, W.Va., and have for the last 15 years.
“It rained last year and it's raining again this year, but people come regardless of the rain,” Baisden said.
At some of the booths, weather meant covering merchandise or selling rain gear, but for food vendors, it was no big deal.
“The weather really don't bother us too much because we're going to be here, we're going to be open through the rain and we're going to keep going and that’s what we’re here for, we’re here to serve the customers,” Daniel Emery said as he chopped steak.
Emery is from Indiana but says he’s happy to be in Kentucky for a few days.
“Being around Kentucky, even the folks up through here are real polite and mannered and stuff, I mean, I really like them,” Emery said.
James Hall, who is from Catlettsburg, Ky., said he’s been coming here for almost 20 years.
“Seeing all the people out and seeing the hillbillies in their attire walking around, visiting with everybody, and having a good time,” Hall said of what he loves about Hillbilly days.
Fewer people may have showed up, but those who chose to come to Hillbilly Days enjoyed the day.
Hillbilly Days continues through Saturday.
