Residents Hopeful Dunbar Police Will Move to New Neighborhood

DUNBAR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Dunbar Police Department is looking to cut down on crime while also increasing its space.

For years, they've been working out of the basement of Dunbar City Hall, but now they're looking for a change of scenery.

A few months ago, a local doctor donated her office to the city. The location would give the department more space and make them more visible to the public.

"About halfway through it will turn into a prisoner area. We'll have some officers, a couple of holding cells," Dunbar’s City Manager Hugh Leishman said.

The move would also be a plus for those who live and work along Leone Lane.

Iris Wilkinson has lived in Dunbar her whole life. She's excited to have the police station closer to her home.

"It would be safer in the evenings," Wilkinson said.

Around the corner, Brenda Connolly spends most of her time at her salon, and that can mean late hours.

"I'm telling you recently, if I'm leaving here at night I'm a little more cautious if I go out here in the breezeway," Connolly said.

She’s hoping to see officers cut back on crime.

"We've had our building marked with graffiti. You just see remnants of a good weekend had by all. So, I think it will be better to get a little bit of police traffic around here," Connolly said.

Moving forward, there's just one concern.

"Money, but like I said we're trying to find things that we can get at bargain prices," Leishman said.

Leishman said the city applied for alternative funding that should cover the cost of renovating the building. He expects to hear something about the status of the funding here soon.

Dunbar's City Council meets next Tuesday to discuss the project.
