RIPLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The heat and humidity didn't stop people from showing their pride in the red, white and blue even though many questioned whether or not Ripley would have a July 4th celebration.
Even without electricity or the air conditioning, hundreds ventured out for an annual tradition. Ripley prides itself, saying it has the biggest small-town 4th of July celebration in the USA.
This year, for many, Independence Day means being free from electricity.
"It's hot and, you know, we're out here just trying to have fun with the kids and do something else with them because it's just so hot at home that there's nothing else we can do," Erin Wetherington said.
As thousands continue to mark to that same beat with no power, some are trying to take their minds off of it by shifting the focus. Instead of thinking about the scorching heat and lack of air conditions, they're thinking about our freedoms and each other.
"Seeing old friends that I haven't seen for years, coming out of the woodwork that's stuck up hollers and what not -- we can come out and enjoy this together," Mike Stapleton said.
"We're all in this together, and I think we all need to give a big salute to the power company because they're working really hard and working in this hot weather," Peggy Thaxton said.
Whether it was showing their American pride or seeking refuge in the shade, the parade is all about counting your blessings. Water bottles were handed out to keep parade-goers refreshed.
"I think it's a big relief just for people to get out and forget about their troubles for a little while and know that they're not the only ones," Steven Moffatt said.
The Ripley parade featured veterans who recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. More live entertainment and fireworks will be part of the celebration Wednesday night.
