Road Collapsing in Putnam County

RED HOUSE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Route 34 near Winfield, West Virginia is a community staple.

"I travel that road back and forth to work every day," said Denver Moore. "Five days a week."

Moore lives in a neighborhood off of Route 34.

Now, his trip down the hill could soon face a major detour. This after the road has started slipping.

"You don't know if you're going to be driving down through there and the whole road is going to give way or not," said Moore.

If that happened, the drop wouldn't be pretty.

The Department of Highways has restricted traffic to one lane, forcing drivers to take turns playing a moving game of Russian Roulette.

"The whole road probably go over the hill," said Larry Luikart

The DOH ensures the remaining road is safe and they continue to monitor it. However, an all-out fix could take several months.

They've moved the project up on their priority list, though funding after a brutal winter is slim.

Even so, neighbors say any closure of the road would be a major nuisance.

"It'd probably add an extra 30-40 minutes to our drive every morning," said Moore.

That's a repair they know will be inconvenient, but a lot better than ending up at the bottom of a ravine.
