Romney Campaigns in Portsmouth, Oh.
PORTSMOUTH, Oh. (WSAZ) -- Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was in Portsmouth Saturday for a rally, making his case for the presidency.
"It's our turn, we've got to grab that torch," Mitt Romney said. "We got to hold it aloft. We got to make sure that America's strong and I commit to you, when I'm president of the United States, I will keep America strong. In our homes, in our economy, in our military."
Romney spoke from the campus at Shawnee State University. Some of the big topics include the national debt, jobs and unemployment and turmoil in the Middle East.
"I love the fact that in America, we live for grand things, for big things," Romney said. "We understand challenges, we rise to the challenge. Now is our time."
Romney criticized President Barak Obama for his healthcare policy and how the president has handled the economy.
"When I become president, we're going to cut federal spending, we're going to cap federal spending and we're finally going to get on track to a balanced budget," Romney said.
Mitt Romney's attacks didn't stop at home either. He blames the Obama administration for delaying a decision about whether China is manipulating its currency to gain a trading edge. Romney says on his first day in office, he'll work to end what he calls Beijing's cheating practices on trade. He says Obama has failed to hold China accountable and as a result, the U.S. Has lost jobs.
"I just get the feeling that Mitt's an honest guy," rally supporter Dan Stevenson said. "He seems to have his act together, he's somebody I can trust."
Hundreds came out for the Romney-Ryan campaign event. We asked what some thought about the message.
"I must say, Mitt Romney has covered so many questions that I have had, he's answered them thoroughly and I'm thrilled that he is running for president," Sue Herrmann said.
"I believe that Mitt Romney is a man of character and stature," rally supporter Duke Sheridan said. "I'll be proud for him to be our president for the next eight years."
However, not everyone agrees with Romney's plan or views. President Obama's campaign responded to Romney's remarks saying, "Mitt Romney just doesn't get it. He would make the middle class pay higher taxes so that the wealthiest Americans can pay less. He thinks we should put women's health care decisions in the hands of politicians and unelected judges. And he wants to turn Medicare into a voucher program. These aren't 'small things' - they're central to our future."
President Obama will make his trip to Southeast Ohio next week. On Wednesday, Obama will speak at a campaign event in Athens at 3 p.m. on Ohio University's College Green. It's free and open to the public but tickets are required. They go on sale in Athens.
