UPDATE 2/27/14 @ 4 p.m.
GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- An elderly man who pleaded guilty to 12 counts of possession of child porn was sentenced to prison Thursday afternoon.

In October, James K. Raasch, 72, of Flatwoods, Ky., pleaded guilty to the charges just minutes before his trial was supposed to start in Greenup County Circuit Court.

Thursday, Raasch was formally sentenced to 10 years with the chance for parole after serving 20% of that sentence. He must also register as a sex offender for 20 years.

Prosecutors say they opposed any chance for parole.

Investigators said a thousand images of child porn were found on Raasch's computer and in a storage area back in 2012.

UPDATE 10/14/13 @ 11:30 a.m.
GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- An elderly man indicted on a dozen child porn charges has avoided a trial with a last minute plea deal Monday morning.

James K. Raasch, 72, of Flatwoods, Ky., pleaded guilty to 12 counts of possession of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor during the hearing in Greenup County Circuit Court.

The plea took place minutes before his trial was supposed to start.

Raasch faces 10 years in prison with a chance for parole after serving 20% of that sentence. He must also register as a sex offender for 20 years. The maximum sentence Raasch could have received was 20 years.

Greenup County Commonwealth Attorney Melvin Leonhart says he was surprised it took Raasch this long to accept a deal considering the amount of evidence prosecution had on him.

Investigators said a thousand images of child porn were found on Raasch's computer and in a storage area back in 2012.

Prior to accepting the plea agreement the judge asked Raasch what it was that he did that made him guilty and Raasch said, "I possessed images I got off the internet"

"It would have been a tough case for the jury to sit and go through to look at those images, I actually got sick to my stomach when I first viewed them" said Leonhart

Raasch's attorney, Sebastian Joy, said the plea agreement was accepted because of Raasch's age and the length of the sentence prosecutors proposed. Joy said it wasn't an easy decision for his client.

"It was a very tough decision, that's why we went all the way to the morning of the trial, we were prepared to go to trial but we didn't see the benefit of going to trial when we had a 10-year difference in the offer and what he was possibly facing," said Joy.

Formal sentencing will be December 19.

Last month Raasch was arrested in Clearwater, Fl. where he had recently been living.

UPDATE 10/4/12 @ 6 p.m.
FLATWOODS, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Clearwater, Florida is a place where many seniors like to retire. It is also a place where a Flatwoods, Ky. retiree was arrested Wednesday night on 1,000 counts of possessing child pornography.

Kentucky State Police say James K. Raasch, 71, of Flatwoods, was arrested in Florida Wednesday night.

Earlier, Troopers had gone to his apartment on Clay Street after receiving a complaint about child porn images. This was after a cleaning crew found box upon box filled with thousands of images of child pornography.

Further investigation led to a nearby storage unit where troopers found what one person called the” mother load.“ Several thousand more pictures of child pornography that included shots of both girls and boys.

Investigators say the 1,000 counts of child pornography may just be the tip of the iceberg. They also say this is one of the most disturbing and unique child porn cases they've ever seen.

Troopers say the key is to now find out if the pictures were gleaned from the internet or locally generated -- or both.

"Due to the volume of images and videos there will be an ongoing process to determine where, when and the ID of anyone in those images,” said KSP Trooper Michael Murriell. “If there are any local victims we could possibly provide them with any assistance or help that they may need.”

The manager of the apartment complex allowed us inside the apartment where Raasch lived for 30 years before moving to Florida. Inside the apartment we found a camera handbook left on bedroom floor.

The apartment manager told WSAZ.com that Raasch was the first to move into the complex 30 years ago. She says he lived alone, had no family of friends visit, and always kept his shades drawn.

The manager says the pictures seized looked like they were from the 1980's. And she says the children she saw in those pictures were very young, 4 or 5-years-old.

Trooper Murriell says Raasch may face more charges depending on where the investigation leads.

Investigators are now waiting to see Raasch will waive extradition hearing so troopers can bring him back to Kentucky to face the charges.
