PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Police in Johnson County believe three recent robberies are connected.

The VIP Fuels Marathon in Hager Hill was robbed twice in the past two weeks. The Shell Mart in Paintsville was robbed earlier this week.

Police say the first robbery was January 12. Sheriff's deputies say a man wearing tan Carhartt clothing and his face covered, came into the Marathon in Hager Hill with a handgun. He demanded cash and left the store. Investigators say he left in a Chevrolet S-10 that was reported stolen from the Van Lear area. The truck was later found wrecked and abandoned on Route 1428.

On January 21, police say a man wearing a green pullover, black hoodie, ball cap and mask came into the Shell Mart in Paintsville with a knife. He also got away with cash. Surveillance video shows him running to the side of the store.

On January 24, the Marathon was robbed again. This time by a man wearing a green hoodie, blue jeans, brown shoes, a ball cap with different colored patches and white scarf over his face. Police say he had a knife and demanded cash. Investigators say he left in Chevrolet pick-up truck believed to have been stolen from Broadway Street in Paintsville.

"There is evidence that link the three together. We strongly believe that all three are the same people," said Sheriff Dwayne Price.

Investigators believe more than one person is involved.

"We do know there's more than one. There's at least a getaway driver," said Price.

Investigators believe the trucks were stolen to use in the robberies.

"Actually, both vehicles were stolen minutes before the robberies," said Sheriff Price.

The sheriff says they have received several tips from the community and investigated all of them. They ask anyone with information on the robberies to report it to the Sheriff's Department.

"We will follow every lead that's called into our office," said Sheriff Price.

All tips can remain anonymous.

Anyone with information on the robberies, suspects, or stolen vehicles can call the Sheriff's Department at 606-789-3411 or the Paintsville Police Department at 606-789-2603.
