CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect of Tuesday’s Clay County murder of 65-year-old Clarence "Jack" Stone.

Neighbors called police about the shooting about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. It happened along Sycamore Street in Hartland.

Stone was at the site of a garden he maintains when he was shot.

“It was just a little garden that I understand that he was helping tend to,” West Virginia State Police Capt. D.L. Lemmon said.

Troopers processed the murder scene for more than 12 hours Tuesday. On Wednesday, though, they said no suspects were in custody.

“We are urging the public, if you have any information which you believe could further the prosecution, possible prosecution of the person or persons responsible involved in this crime, please contact the Clay State Police at 304-286-3185,” Lemmon urged Wednesday.

Police said they have identified and questioned persons of interest and said the murder does not appear to be random.

CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia State Police have released the name of a man who was found shot to death in Clay County.

Troopers tell WSAZ.com Clarence Jackson Stone, 65, was shot about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday on Sycamore Street in Hartland.

Neighbors say Stone had a garden on the street, and that is where the shooting happened.

So far no arrests have been made in the case.

CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A family is filled with grief and a small community is in disbelief following a Tuesday afternoon murder.

It happened on Sycamore Street in the Hartland section of Clay County.

Neighbors tell WSAZ.com they heard several gunshots about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Police have not released the victim’s name, but family friends said the man was from Indore and had a garden on Sycamore Street.

“He was disabled and that was one of his interests: gardening,” said Retta Brown, a family friend.

Those who knew the victim said he was well-liked by many in Clay County, but one neighbor said that just weeks before Tuesday's murder, the victim confided in him that he felt unsafe.

“He said I think there are going to be problems down at the garden today and I said none that I know of and he said a certain individual has been threatening me a little bit,” said the victim, who didn’t want to be identified.

Troopers said no suspects are in custody.

The West Virginia State Police tells WSAZ.com the shooting happened on Sycamore Drive in Hartland about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.

State Police say a man was shot and he has died from his injuries.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case.
