UPDATE 5/23/13 @ 9:30 a.m.
HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) -- The National Weather Service says a storm that destroyed two mobile homes and injured two people in Teays Valley was a microburst.

The storm hit about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday with estimated wind speeds between 70 and 80 miles per hour.

The winds cut a path about 150 yards wide and about a third of a mile long, primarily along Marina Drive.

The weather service said Thursday that the mobile homes were destroyed by trees uprooted or felled by the storm. Five other mobile homes were damaged. One uprooted tree hit a vehicle and turned it on its side.

A microburst is sinking air in a thunderstorm with a scale of less than 2.5 miles. The weather service says microbursts can cause damage comparable to tornadoes.

PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Severe winds turned homes into targets for uprooted trees in Marina Park in Teays Valley.

According to the Hurricane Fire Department, four homes were destroyed, and two people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Neighbors say the storm began about 3:30 Wednesday afternoon and lasted about ten minutes.

When Debbie Goff returned home from work, she saw that two large trees had fallen into her house.

After almost three decades there, she has to find a new place to live, but she says they’re just grateful no one was seriously hurt.

"Somebody could have been home,” Goff said. “It could have been a lot worse."

Alice Whittington rushed home after getting a call a tree had knocked her home in two.

"It's going to be pretty hard to start over," Whittington said.

Faith Borden works in Charleston as a Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the Department of Commerce.

She lives a couple blocks from Marina Park and walked over to survey the damage.

She says it appears the damage was caused by straight line winds in a thunderstorm, which were likely more than 65 miles per hour.
