Text Alerts Help Notify Some Southern Ohio Residents of Neighborhood Crime

NEW BOSTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Residents of New Boston can learn more about the crime in the neighborhood by signing up for text alerts on their computers and phones.

"The quicker we can get information out to the community, the quicker we can solve that crime," New Boston Police Capt. Steve Goins said. "It helps us communicate with the public and then the public communicates with us."

The New Boston Police Department and Village Council have partnered with Crime Reports, a free service that enables crime reports to be automatically uploaded on a daily basis.

Joe Ferguson lives on a block where someone was the victim of crime just a few weeks ago. While the crime scene is visible from Ferguson's front porch, he knew nothing about it.

"This gives people a little more information so they can pay attention to what's going on in the neighborhood," Ferguson said. "If there is something going on where people may notice something that can help someone else out."
