HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It may very well be remembered as "The Winter That Wasn't."
Fans of cold weather and snow have been disappointed this winter season but the West Virginia Department of Transportation says, as of now, it's paving the way for a terrific spring.
"It's been an extremely mild winter," says Brent Walker, communications director with the West Virginia Department of Transportation. "Right now, we're about 66 percent through our snow removal and ice control season, and we're just under 30 percent into our budget."
It's not that it matters to motorists, necessarily, it's what matters to the vehicles they drive.
Ed Armbruster is the maintenance engineer for District Two in West Virginia. "With less salt on the roads," Armbruster says, "it could mean less potholes this spring."
The money for the WVDOT doesn't roll over; it's a "use it or lose it" scenario.
"We haven't had to spend that much money this year," Armbruster said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to turn that money into pavement and working on our secondary roads more this spring."
