UPDATE 7/16/13 @ 11:16 p.m.
JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Jackson County man made a gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon when he spotted a white pick-up truck engulfed by Sandy Creek in Silverton.

“You could only see the truck from the bottom with the windows up. The rest of the truck was submerged,” West Virginia State Police Sgt. J.P. Murphy said.

Police confirm the 57-year-old driver was traveling south on Interstate 77 when he drifted into a median, sending his truck through the air before it plummeted down onto rocks.

The official cause of death is unknown but preliminary reports indicate it was the crash -- and not drowning -- that killed the victim.

“Traveling that far and down that far and the damage to the truck,” Murphy said. “It sustained significant front end damage. It would be very unlikely that anyone would survive the damage done to the truck.”

Murphy said because of the body’s condition police believe that the victim and the truck had been in the water for as many as four days. though he said debris from the truck and tire marks were still visible from the crash Tuesday afternoon.

“It's pretty obvious how it happened. It's just the why that we're going to have to figure out,” Murphy said.

The victim’s body has been sent to the coroner, who will attempt to identify the exact cause of death.

The victim’s name has not been released. As of Tuesday night, police said they were still trying to locate the man’s family.
